Round 3...

In the past we've had two hamsters run away on two seperate occasions. Apparently they've started a tiny hamster army and needed recruits in the area. We just couldn't keep a fucking hamster.
Granted, we always bought long-haired hamsters which are solitary animals and live alone. Too sad. So this time we decided to get 2 Siberian Dwarf hamsters and they're the cutest things on the planet. They fit perfectly in your palm, and are too tiny to crawl out of the cage! Mwuahahaha!
We'll see how it goes...

Possibly the coolest video game I've ever seen.

Brief Synopsis:
You are Kratos, a fallen Spartan commander who sells his soul to the Greek god Ares in exchange for the death of his immediate enemy and, of course, demigod powers. In his newly tattooed, vitamin-D deficient form, Kratos commits unspeakable acts of violence and destruction. Visions and nightmares of his hideous deeds come to haunt his every hour. Infuriated with the thought of possibly going insane, Kratos vows to take down Ares himself. Luckily, Zeus, Athena and others in the pantheon are none too happy with Ares, as he is currently stomping through Athens with a seething army of monsters. With the other gods at his back, Kratos sets off to do what few mortals would dare – to kill a god.

Game play:
Your quest takes you through various locales in mythical Greece by way of some truly impressive level design. You’ll scour the streets and sewers of Athens, investigate great shimmering halls within towering structures, brave blinding desert storms, survive the dangers of a ship at sea and much, much more. One of the most notable is scaling the titan Chronos to reach the massive city of Pandora, which Chronos is cursed to carry on his back. It's awesome. Fans of the greek myths will be in heaven.
But don’t get caught sightseeing, because Ares isn’t called the god of war for nothing. Thankfully, the other gods have blessed you with your devastating Blades of Chaos, which have been cleverly attached to your forearms with long chains. Our tortured hero wields these like flaming, bladed whips, slicing and dicing enemies with ease. Ginsu beware.

But for all its sweeping beauty, God of War is not without its foibles. Most obvious is the lack of multiplayer, although that’s not a huge deal since this is such a story-driven game. The number of enemy types, though, is a bit sparse. The killing is fun, but could use more variety.
And most importantly... where is the 'look' button !?!

For all that, it's hard to impress when it comes to action gaming, but God of War really gets it right.
One word sums it up - Badass.

Can you say the best turntabalist in the world ? DJ Craze has won the title 'world champion' of the DMC chamionships 3 years in a row. He would have continued to win, had they not asked him to stop coming when other contestants quit competing. There's just no beating this guy.
I saw him at a cave party last night, and my jaw was, literally, hanging open. This guy was beat juggling with arms I didn't even know he had. He would turn around and use his back to slow down or speed up the record, twitch the cross fader, scratch, you name it.
Besides... who the fuck can go from a sample of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" to Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams" without losing tempo or flavour !? If you can find video clips of this kid... do it.

Falling is easy; it's the landing that hurts.
Breakfall: A Breakfall can help make those landings somewhat less painful if done properly.
One bonus of breakfalling... One can choose where the damage of the fall will be taken. The only restrictions are that at least TWO hit locations must share the damage.
Koshinage: Hip throw. Refers to any number of techniques where one executes a throw by projecting the attacker over the hips.

At Aikido last night, someone was doing a koshinage technique to me. (I was the attacker). It was my turn to be thrown over his hip, flip through the air, and breakfall gracefully enough to get right back up.

However, I did not find two hit locations to share the impact of the fall. My knee took every bit of it. I'm a gimp. I can barely walk today and it feels like my joint was bruised... beneath the skin. I don't care that I got hurt. I'm more pissed off that everyone had to see my horrible breakfall. And more importantly... I only got to perform one koshi... and it's one of my favorites.

God is fucking with me this week, thanks to jabber.

Yep... I'm finally doing a bit on one of my favorite bands. And I'll jump right in.

Their first album, Parachutes, is a perfect example of british melancholy and introspective rock. Moody and emotional, but more developed and artistically realized than Radiohead at a similar stage in their career. Here, I fell in love with Coldplay.

Next came A Rush of Blood to the Head. Aah. This album was smarter, more poetic and more mature than it's predecessor. This wasn't supposed to happen. I mean, come on. When's the last time a new band was able to capably follow up a surprise hit album and live up to the lofty expectations foisted upon them by fans and critics ? But I've heard this album dozens of times, and I'm completely floored. Okay, Coldplay, you win. I surrender. You've compelled me to gush.

Their newest album, X & Y, was just released last tuesday, and I haven't bought my copy yet, so I can't offer up any opinions. I only hope it lives up to the Coldplay in my mind.

Aah, It's Summer

Have you ever experienced a southern summer ? Let me tell you about it.

You wake up, hop in the shower, get dressed, eat some breakfast, and step outside. It's so incredibly humid, your body is instantly covered in a layer of sweat.
Shower, no good.
Clothes, pointless.

Our Aikido dojo is on the 3rd floor of an incredibly old building, there's no insulation on the ceilings, so the sun bakes the dojo all day long before we get there for early evening training. Oh, did I mention the air conditioner is a piece of shit ?
Imagine about 15 people in heavy gi's, heavy hakama's, and a 90 degree room.
Everyone is dripping w/ sweat, you can see through the gi's (no, this is not sexy), and you can't hold on to anyone's arms b/c of the dripping-ness. Yummy. I can't wait for August.

update: upon further research, wearing an hakama to class does NOT make one's technique better. It does not allow one to create super-cosmic chi flows with your fingertips, or stand on one's head w/ a katana balanced on your feet. No, it does none of these things. There should have been a warning label.

For you hardcore Harry Potter fans... Dumbledore will die in book 6 if you didn't figure that out already.
A couple of class-A idiots stole two copies of the books, fresh off the printer, and leaked some of the story. JKR sued, of course... but said idiots leaked information most of us guessed and knew to be true, but others didn't want to believe. He will die. I can't tell you enough. He will die.

On other subjects: Aikido is much cooler when your Sensei talks about chopping off heads, then kicking them so they roll across the floor when you're done chopping them off.

I just saw The Life Aquatic for the first time a couple days ago. My kind of movie. I highly recommend it just to see Willem Dafoe cripple the screen w/ his spandex shorts and to smile for a bit, cause it's so unexpected to see him in a role like that. I laughed. Alot.
